Real Thanksgiving

On this Thanksgiving Day 2009, I wish everyone a wonderful day with family and friends celebrating everything we have to be thankful for.

It is especially important to give thanks for all the good that has come our way in a time when many are suffering from the poor economy. It’s gratifying that Americans are so resilient. No matter the problems we have, we come back looking for a better day in the future.

It’s sunny here in Southern California. A beautiful fall day with a bit of briskness in the air (no snow) and yes, our leaves do turn color and fall off the trees too. Later today, my nephews will join my wife and I for Thanksgiving dinner and some fun games.

Today, let’s all put aside the workday challenges we all have and relax and enjoy this day. Our most important priorities are friends and family. Let the rest of the world recede and take care of and enjoy them.

I have but one wish for today: Make every day Thanksgiving. Showing gratitude for the friends we have and the gifts we’ve received is an every day necessity. We have good coming to us all the time. It is so easy to get lost in the details of day to day life that we miss much of the good.

Here are a few ways we can give thanks every day:

  • If someone does something nice for you, stop to give a sincere, heartfelt thanks.
  • Thank those who run the organizations you belong to. Their efforts are crucial to it’s success.
  • If you receive a compliment in your email, say thanks to the writer.
  • Give compliments whenever you see something you like.
  • Begin your day by consciously noticing the people and things you are most grateful for. Let those people know.
  • Be courteous in everything you do and say. You never know when that moment of courtesy will be returned tenfold.

There are many, many more ways to show your thankfulness. The important point to remember is that when we give thanks, we receive thanks. When we show gratitude for our good, people are attracted to us. When we show gratitude, the other person feels great, and so do we.

Let’s make a moment of Thanksgiving a daily event, not a yearly one.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!!
