The Only Kind of Writing That Matters

We’ve all been brainwashed into thinking that there are lots of kinds of writing and that you have to learn each one in detail before you can do it.

This is not true.

In fact, there is only one kind of writing that matters and you can use it anywhere.

Before I tell you what it is, here are a few key points:

  • We write for one reason, to influence people to accept our ideas or buy our products.
  • For our writing to be effective, people have to read it.
  • People have very little time to read these days.
  • Therefore people will read what interests them and little or nothing else.

To be read, you must design your writing to attract the audience you want. You cannot write to everyone. If you do nobody will read you.

So what’s the one kind of writing you must do to the exclusion of everything else?

You must write in a way that grabs the attention, intrigues the reader, creates anticipation, draws the reader through, and gives huge value at the end.

In other words, your writing must be interesting. This applies everywhere. It doesn’t matter whether you are writing a blog post like this, a book, a novel, a Twitter post, an article, an e-book, a sales letter, or any of the other myriads of writing styles out there.

If you remember one key point, you will do well. All of the so-called kinds of writing are just delivery methods for your message. The message is what’s important. If you can’t present your message in a way that readers want to read, your message will be lost.

The cardinal sin of writing is to bore your reader. If you think you can get away with poor writing, lack of stories, lazy editing, and bad presentation, think again. Would YOU read that kind of writing? Of course not. Then don’t inflict it on others.

If you make your writing interesting, you will attract readers, you will attract customers and clients, and you will be read.

  • Hi, Lee!

As a fellow 30 day post challenger, I am really appreciating the wealth of knowlege I am discovering through my fellow challengers. How would I have found you otherwise?

Thanks for the tips on quality writing and you are so right, people don't have time to read uninteresting stuff, and there's a lot of that on the internet. I look forward to learning from you and improving my writing skills

    Thanks!

  • Hi Christine, Thank you for your comments. I've been frustrated by the lack of quality in most of the writing on the Internet. Hopefully these posts will help people write better.
